Connecticut Veterans Legal Center reports, 2021–2022

I designed two reports for Connecticut Veterans Legal Center (CVLC). The organization provides legal representation at no-cost to veterans. In addition to helping individual clients, CVLC is a national leader in policy research, working to understand and dismantle inequity within the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs.

The first report, Gatekeepers to Opportunity, shows that white students are significantly overrepresented in congressional nominations for military academies, with members of Congress—on both sides of the aisle—providing only 6% of nominations to Black students and 8% to Hispanic students.

The report included a Data Analysis section that featured tables and graphs in addition to text. The entire section got a light blue background, to make it easy to navigate to in both print and screen formats.

I illustrated the figures using a consistent color scheme (e.g. Asian/PI data was represented in red across the entire section) so that readers could draw intuitive conclusions.

The second report, Discretionary Injustice, shows that Black service members are up to two times as likely as white service members to receive a less than honorable discharge, blocking them from receiving the benefits they have earned.
