Reading Room redesign
Reading Room redesign, 2022
San Francisco Public Library
The reading room in the Magazines & Newspapers Center in the Main Library underwent a reorganization in 2022. Moving from an alphabetical arrangement to category groupings increased discoverability, letting patrons find new magazines they didn’t know they were looking for. Librarian staff asked for new signage to mark out the different categories available for browsing.
For the signs on the windows, I used flexible vinyl that attaches to the glass with static cling instead of adhesive. This means that the signage is temporary — important if librarian staff decide to devote more or less space to any one category in the future — and that it attaches to the glass invisibly, so that it appears as a clean white rectangle from outside the room.
